West Peoria's Strategic Visioning Program!

As a small community looking to engage in its own development and improve the quality of life of the area, West Peoria residents have decided to be pro-active. In 2006, West Peoria was engaged in the Mapping the Future of Your Community Program. MAPPING (Management And Planning Programs Involving Non-metropolitan Groups) is a two-phase program aimed at improving local decision making capabilities for community and economic development. During the first phase of the program, a broadly representative group of residents and local leaders are led through a series of visioning, team-building, and planning exercises.  As a result, concerned residents have comprised a vision for the community’s future, a set of prioritized long-range goals, and related short-term action steps.

The second phase of the MAPPING Program consists of the community realizing and achieving its goals through successful implementation of the locally supported projects. The challenge ahead for West Peoria is to put their plans into action in the months and years to come. The City has hired their first Planning & Development Coordinator, and also enlisted an AmeriCorps VISTA member to work on projects to improve the community.  It is wonderful to see a community really take charge of its future to pursue a cleaner, safer, and more prosperous community!
